Wal-Mart Logo to get a Makeover

July 5th, 2008

New Wal-Mart LogoThe familiar logo of Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, is getting a makeover for the first time since 1992.

Officials with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. have announced that the company will begin replacing logos on the front of its U.S. stores with a new logo design beginning this fall. A Wal-Mart spokesman said these changes would reflect changes which have already been seen by Wal-Mart customers in some store signs and other advertisements.

However, the Wall Street Journal has reported that the upcoming new look would include eliminating the hyphen completely from the company’s name. The existing logo shows hyphen as a star at its more than 3,600 U.S. stores. The new logo which was launched on June 30, shows the company’s name in blue, with a orange star burst following behind.

Old Wal-Mart LogoThis “restyling” of the logo comes as the Bentonville-based company continues to tweak its image after facing criticism from union-led groups and local communities across the nation opposed to big-box store developments.

Wal-Mart’s customers remain most familiar with its current incarnation, a white block-type logo lit against a deep blue background, with red lines above and below.
